When Someone Is Trying to Change But It Still Doesn't Feel Like Enough

I have been trying to exercise more regularly.
The intention is genuinely there. I know my body feels better when I move. I want to feel stronger and take good care of myself.
And yet, making exercise part of my day has been much harder than I expected.
A day gets full. Exercise gets pushed aside. Then I look back and think… Caroline, another day without exercise.
There is a gap between what I sincerely want to do and what I am actually able to make happen.
It would be easy to conclude that I must not want it enough.
But that isn't true.
I am trying. My intention is real. My capacity to live that intention consistently just hasn't caught up yet.
That realization made something soften in me.
Because intention is not just about where we want to go. It also lives in how we meet ourselves when we haven't gotten there yet.
And I began to wonder:
What happens when someone really is trying… but what they are able to give still doesn't feel like enough?
There is a particular kind of disappointment when someone seems to understand us, makes an effort, and then falls back into the same pattern.
We think:
I thought you understood.
I thought this time would be different.
It can even begin to feel insincere. Maybe they said the right thing because they wanted the conflict to end. Perhaps they never really understood at all.
Understanding something and being able to live it consistently are not the same thing.
We can understand before we know how to change.
We can sincerely want to respond differently and still find ourselves back in a familiar pattern.
Our intention may have moved before the rest of us knows how to follow.
I know this because I can see it in myself.
I really do want to exercise.
Apparently, wanting to exercise and becoming a person who exercises regularly are two very different stages. 😅
This matters in relationships too.
Someone may genuinely want to understand us better, yet emotional conversations are still foreign to them. They may be learning how to stay present instead of becoming defensive. Perhaps they are trying to express care in a way that doesn't come naturally.
From the receiving side, their effort may feel painfully small.
We can see a tiny change and think: that's it?
Especially when we have been waiting a long time.
Yet what looks small to us may require enormous effort from where that person is standing.
That does not mean we have to call their effort enough.
I can recognize that you are trying without pretending that I am no longer hurting.
Your effort is real.
My need is real too.
There is room for both.
And then there is the moment when that person is us.
We set an intention. We want to be more patient with our children. We want to rest before we are exhausted. We want to respond instead of react.
Then we catch ourselves doing exactly what we said we wanted to stop doing.
And suddenly all the compassion we might offer another person disappears.
You know better.
Why are you doing this again?
This is what I find so beautiful about practice.
Awareness gives us another possibility.
I can see the intention clearly. I can also see that I didn't live it today. I don't need to change either fact.
This is what happened. From here, I can begin again.
Compassion simply allows me to meet the person who is trying without turning against her.
I missed my exercise today. That is what happened today.
It does not need to become a story about who I am or whether I will ever change.
Tomorrow, I can begin again.
I wonder whether we can offer the same spaciousness to the people we love.
Seeing their effort does not require us to abandon ourselves.
We can appreciate the direction they are moving while being honest about the distance that still exists.
There may even be grief in that.
I see that you love me. I see that you are trying. And there are still things I long for that you may not be able to give me right now.
There is something very tender about allowing all of that to be true at the same time.
And then, from that tender place, we get to choose what we want to carry into the next moment.
Not to fix them. Not to disappear our own needs. But to notice what we are bringing into the space between us.
That, too, is where intention lives.
This reflection is about the gap between intention and capacity, not about tolerating harm. If a relationship is causing you harm, your safety and wellbeing always come first.
Is there someone in your life whose effort has been difficult to see… because it hasn't yet become the change you hoped for?
What happens when you make a little room for the possibility that their intention may be sincere, even while honoring your own experience?
And perhaps there is another person worth considering:
You.
Where have you been sincerely trying, but judging yourself only by the distance you haven't crossed yet?
You need enough awareness to see where you actually are, enough compassion to stay on your own side, and enough equanimity to let change take the time it takes.
Intention gives us a direction. Practice is how we learn to live it.
We are allowed to still be learning.
And if you'd like to practice together, you're warmly invited to join our weekly classes. 🌿

May we learn to recognize the effort in others, and in ourselves.
Sometimes our heart already knows the direction it wants to go.
We are simply still learning how to walk there.
May we meet that space with awareness, compassion, and equanimity.
With warmth and always love,

Caroline 🌿
