I watched Satir's workshop on youtube for about five days. It was really eye opening for me. Not just her knowledge of human behavior and inner dialogs, but also for her ways of reaching out to people. The way she interacted with people was soft yet directed. I would love to learn more about her style of inspiring people while offered them with a place to land their heart softly.
Share couple of talk points I really love to highlight the workshop:
For the women who she categorized and treated as manic depression, she felt she never found her.
Clients are only hard to work with when we decide how they should be and then try to make them that way. They do not have hope in that kind of treatment.
Meeting another person is like one treasure meets another treasure. Because you are unique and you are the only kind of your kind. (behavior is another thing, being a treasure does not mean you are right for everything!)
"To call attention to something that is present but not yet notice is a fundamental facet of my work with people."
She spend very little time with the problem, but find out what are the dreams for her clients. She asked "What do you want out of this?" "What do you want for yourself?" "What do you want to have happen for you?"
The defenses we developed as a child tried to protect ourselves, but lost to use any other ways to deal with tings. During the defenses, we lose what we really want , because it protect us so well, we die in the process.
When you walk into the unknown and realized you did not die from making that risk, you realized you could find some nice people and great things happen to you instead. Then you are secure enough to change, to not keep the status quote but are willing to take risk and try to go to a place you have never been.
I will share this much so far and encourage everyone who is fascinating about work to check out the youtube video!
