Maybe This Is What Healing Looks Like

I loved our conversation in Monday's class.

One of our students asked: "How do I let go of an old scar?"

Not a scar on the body. A scar from the past. A painful memory that still visits sometimes.

Maybe you know that feeling too.

Something small reminds you of what happened. A familiar ache returns. And almost before you can catch it, another voice appears —

"I thought I had already worked through this." "Why is this still here?" "I should be further along by now."

What Are We Actually Measuring?

As we explored her question together, I noticed something.

So many of us measure our healing by what no longer happens.

I'll know I'm doing better when the memory no longer hurts. When I stop feeling angry. When it just… doesn't come back anymore.

It sounds so reasonable.

But what if we've been measuring the wrong thing?

What if the real milestone isn't "I didn't get triggered"…

but "I noticed I was triggered"?

The Moment Everything Shifts

That might sound like a small difference.

But it is fundamentally different.

Because the moment you notice —

"I feel hurt right now." "I notice the urge to push this away." "I notice I'm judging myself for feeling this."

— you are no longer completely lost inside it.

Something in you has stepped back just enough to notice.

That is not failure. That is the victory.

Awareness has entered the room. And awareness… is already freedom beginning.

What You Are Really Remembering

Every time you notice the old pattern returning, and something in you recognizes it, even for a moment, you are remembering something deeper than the habit.

You are remembering that there is a part of you that can witness it all.

In Buddhism, we might call this our Buddha nature. Not something we have to build or earn. Something we are slowly remembering, one moment of noticing at a time.

There's a line from A Course in Miracles I love returning to: "Light and joy and peace abide in me."

Those words are not a promise that we'll never struggle.

They are a reminder that beneath every old wound, every familiar reaction, every moment of "not again" — something whole has never left.

It has always been here.

A Different Question to Ask Yourself

So perhaps this week, instead of asking "Did I get triggered?"

you might try asking: "Did I notice?"

And if the answer is yes —

Pause for a moment. Take a breath. And let yourself feel that as something worth celebrating.

Because maybe freedom doesn't begin when we stop getting triggered.

Maybe it begins the moment we notice that we have been.

A Gentle Reflection

How have you been measuring your own progress lately?

And what might shift if you began to celebrate awareness… instead of waiting for perfection?

If this resonated with you, feel free to pass it along to someone who might need to hear it today. 🌿

And if you'd like to practice together, you're warmly invited to join our weekly classes at zitamae.com/offerings.

May we be a little less harsh with ourselves,
and a little more willing to trust and appreciate
the one who is slowly awakening.
