Right View — But Not the Way I Expected

This week in Mindful Living, we began a new series called A Freer Way to Live, exploring the Noble Eightfold Path in everyday life.

We started with Right View.

The word "right" can sound a little rigid. As though there is one correct way to see life, and our job is to learn it.

For me, Right View begins with a much more personal question:

How am I seeing my life?

Because the way I see something changes the way I experience it.

The View I Noticed

I notice I have this view:

A capable person should be able to keep up with everything life requires.

I am capable. I can handle a lot. So when something needs my attention, I tend to give it.

There is always another email to answer. Something to organize. Someone who needs something. A decision to make. A problem to solve. Something I could improve, finish, remember, or take care of.

I can do all of these things.

But I started noticing how tired I was of feeling that life was an endless series of things requiring something from me.

And then something shifted:

I don't have to give my energy to everything that reaches for it.

Not Having Plans Doesn't Mean I'm Available

Life will keep bringing things to me. That part is not going to stop.

But something appearing in my life does not automatically mean I have to give myself to it.

There are emails that can wait. Invitations I do not need to accept. Conversations I do not need to enter. Problems I do not need to solve today.

And here is something I have been sitting with:

Not having plans does not mean I am available.

Empty time belongs to me too. It can be spent on something that enriches me, restores me, or simply lets me breathe. I don't have to fill every open space with what life is asking.

Even my own thoughts do this.

A worry appears and immediately wants my attention. My mind can spend the next twenty minutes following it, solving it, imagining what might happen.

Or I can notice:

Oh, there you are.

And leave it alone.

This is beginning to feel like another kind of freedom.

Not freedom from responsibility.

Freedom to choose what I give myself to.

Contraction or Clarity?

When I pull my energy back, what is actually happening inside me?

Sometimes I can feel myself closing. I am irritated. I want people to leave me alone. My body tightens. There is an edge to it.

Then there are moments when I simply know:

I don't need to go there.

No anger. No need to push anything away.

Just a clear sense of where my energy belongs.

The action from the outside may look exactly the same — I might say no, I might not respond, I might walk away.

But inside, the experience is completely different.

One feels like contraction.

The other feels like clarity.

The practice is noticing which one is happening.

That noticing itself gives me a little more choice.

And I think this is important — because sometimes what looks like a boundary is actually just irritation. And sometimes what looks like giving in is actually a genuine yes.

The outer action doesn't tell us very much.

The inner experience tells us everything.

Three Ways of Relating to Life

When life feels overwhelming, I notice the pull to control it.

Organize it better. Simplify. Protect my time. Build more space.

I still value all of that.

But even the most carefully created life will change. Children grow. Bodies change. People need us. Plans fall apart. Something unexpected arrives on a perfectly organized Tuesday morning.

Life keeps being life.

So I began to see three ways of relating to it.

Life controls me. I know this feeling. Everything is coming at me, and I am trying to keep up.

I control life. This one can feel empowering for a while. If I organize everything well enough, life will finally behave.

But I don't think that is freedom either.

I am in relationship with life.

That third one changes something for me.

A relationship is not one person controlling the other. There is listening. There is responding. There is movement between the two.

Life brings me something. I meet it. Then I get to see what is mine to do.

There are things I will wholeheartedly say yes to. There are things I will let pass by. Something may matter deeply, but not today. Another thing may interrupt every plan I had — because I know this is where I want to be.

I don't need to control every part of that.

And I don't need to surrender all of my energy to it either.

Where Right View Becomes Practical

For me, this is where Right View becomes very practical.

It is not about adopting the correct philosophy.

It is noticing the view I am already living from.

Life controls me. I should be able to handle all of this. Everything that reaches for my attention deserves it.

These are views. Not facts.

And once I see them clearly… a little space opens.

Before we change what we do, perhaps we need to see more clearly what we have been believing.

Maybe that is why this teaching belongs at the beginning of the Eightfold Path.

Because once we see it clearly — a little more choice becomes available.

A freer way to live.

A Gentle Curiosity

As you move through your days this week, notice what reaches for your energy.

You don't need to push it away. You also don't need to immediately give yourself to it.

Just pause long enough to ask:

Does this need me?

Do I want to give my energy here?

And when the answer is no — notice what that feels like inside.

Is there tightness?

Or is there a quiet sense of clarity?

That noticing is the practice.

And from clearer seeing, we may discover that we have more freedom than we thought.

May we learn, slowly, to be in relationship with life. To see a little more clearly. To hear a little more honestly. And then to choose — where do I truly want to give myself?
