Q&A: How Can I Maintain and Enhance My Practice? Including Tips on Time Extending, Daily Practice, and Transitioning to Silent Meditation

Many of us are familiar with the critical voice that questions our meditation practice. I've often heard participants say, "Caroline, I 'should' practice every day, but I can't seem to do it. What should I do?"

First, let’s acknowledge and stay present with our emotions surrounding this expectation. You might feel disappointment, anger, or sadness. Recognize these emotions and hold your expectations with tenderness. This is an ideal moment to practice mindfulness. When these feelings arise, it’s a signal to be kind to ourselves. Often, there are beliefs tied to these emotions, and by identifying these limiting beliefs, we can better recognize and address similar feelings as they appear in other aspects of our lives.

Next, let’s explore actionable steps when you feel the urge to practice more frequently or in new ways. Recognize your desire for growth and change, then we can incorporate techniques that support these actions. One effective method is to pair a new behavior with an existing one. For example, I always meditate after I send my kids to school. Experiment with extending your meditation time, trying a day of silent meditation, or adding an extra day to your routine. Take small, manageable steps and celebrate your progress along the way. Recognizing and appreciating your growth is essential.

Speaking of recognition, it's crucial to understand that the journey of mindfulness includes both growth and rest. Nature teaches us this through its seasons: times of growth like spring and summer and times of rest and restoration like fall and winter. Continuous expansion without rest isn’t sustainable, and the same principle applies to our learning and self-improvement. Appreciate where you are now and recognize that you are doing wonderfully. This self-compassion is a vital part of the path.

May your practice be filled with moments of joy and self-love. Remember to be kind to yourself every day.
